![]() Chart datum is the average of low tide heights for the area, not the ocean floor, and it is set low so that tides don’t dip below it. Determine high tideīefore you look at the high and low tides, you have to understand what these terms actually mean. Once you know what information you’re looking for and you have the appropriate tide table, find the date you will be visiting – tides change day by day so there’s no point in looking at today’s data if you’re not going for another week. Are you trying to find out when low tide is so you can cut across the beach on foot? Do you want to go wild swimming or are you seeking the best surf conditions? If so, you’ll probably want to know when the tide is high, and how high it will be.ĭo you want to go wild swimming or are you seeking the best surf conditions? How to read a tide chartīefore using a tide chart, it’s helpful to know what kind of information you’re looking for. It’s worth knowing that all tide tables are slightly different, but generally speaking, once you have the tide table for where you’re going, there are three important pieces of information to pay attention to: date, time and tide height. Tide tables are often posted at the beach, and you can find them online. It’s important to know that tides can be vastly different from one location to another, so you’ll want the specific tide table for the area where you’re going. They will tell you when low tide will be, when high tide will be, and how low and high the water will be. Tide charts indicate the times of low and high tides for a specific area on specific dates. The two low waters each day are the higher low water and the lower low water.Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels, which occur at regular intervals (Image credit: Jen and Sim Benson) The two high tides on a given day are normally not the same height – these are the higher high water and the lower high water in tide tables. Tides are mostly semi-diurnal (meaning two high waters & two low waters each day), or diurnal (meaning one tidal cycle per day). But in some locations the moments of slack tide differ quite a lot from those of high and low water. Slack water normally happens near high water and low water. Then the tide reverses direction and is said to be turning. ![]() When a tidal current ceases it is called slack water or a slack tide. Tides produce currents known as tidal streams. The water stops falling, reaching low tide.Sea level falls over several hours, revealing the intertidal zone ebb tide. The water rises to its highest level, reaching high tide.Sea level rises over several hours, covering the intertidal zone flood tide.Tide changes proceed over several stages: The Ocean Isle Beach area experiences four tides a day, two high and two low each day. While tides are usually the largest source of short-term sea-level fluctuations, sea levels are also subject to forces such as wind and barometric pressure changes, resulting in storm surges, especially in shallow seas and near coasts. ![]() ![]() Tides are when sea level rises and falls due to the combined effects of forces of gravity exerted by the Moon and the Sun and also the rotation of the Earth. They are not certified to be correct, and they do not incorporate the effects of tropical storms, El Niño, seismic events, continental drift, or changes in global sea level.
